Native American Arikara Grass Dance Whip / Quirt
Ceremonial regalia whip having beaded trade fabric pendent strap folded through a woven fiber loop concealing metal tinkler cones, the strap being attached using buckskin to the carved wood handle having remains of a rawhide loop at the end and an ink inscription reading ‘Chief Mad Bear Presented to Scott Cody March The 11 1871 / At Grand River Agency D. Territory’ (Mad Bear was a Sioux negotiator at Grand River Agency, died in 1915)
